Upanayana

Upanayanam (also called Munji, Yajnopavita, or Janeu Ceremony) is one of the most significant samskaras in Hindu tradition · the initiation of a boy into formal Vedic education and the Brahmacharya (student) stage of life. The boy receives the sacred thread (Yajnopavita or Janeu) and is initiated into the Gayatri Mantra by his father, symbolically entering the world of knowledge and spiritual discipline. It is a second birth · the boy is said to be "twice born" (Dvija).
